5 thing to know about Pilates teacher training

Maybe you’ve been taking Pilates for a while and you dream of learning more, maybe even teaching one day but it seems a lofty goal. It’s an investment and starting something new can be overwhelming. We understand! So we’ve put together some common things about Pilates teacher training that we wished we would’ve known.

  1. Prerequisites and Self Study Hours

This means...you have to do the work. Every program has self study hours. You’ll need to practice teaching, observe other teachers teaching, and of course… do Pilates regularly. Plan accordingly. Our Pilates mat teacher training is all online, so you can move through it on your own time. However, we recommend scheduling time(s) each week that are your “Pilates time.” You can use that set time to go through lessons inside the program, doing self practice, observing, or student teaching. For our online training, we require 40 hrs self practice, 40 hrs student teaching, and 25 hrs observation (this does not include your hours of lessons and classes inside the program). If you keep to a regular schedule of “Pilates time,” you’ll move through these hours and be certified in as little as a few months.

  2. What kind of program is it?

Is it more focused on just the Pilates repertoire (a.k.a. classical or traditional)? Are you looking for something that allows for the more rehabilitative aspects of Pilates (a.k.a. contemporary)? Is it a mat certification or a comprehensive program? Is it a weekend course or months long? You have to decide for yourself and your lifestyle. Our online Pilates mat program can be done at your own pace. We cover anatomy and biomechanics (hitting some of that rehabilitative aspect) AND we cover the Pilates repertoire (we cover that classical stuff too). You learn how to break the exercises down and teach to anyone. Plus you get bonuses on how to set yourself up for success in your new career.

  3. Tuition

Yeah- it costs money to learn from experienced trainers who are passing along decades of information. Prices range from a weekend mat training at under $500 to full comprehensive trainings that are over $5,000. Our online program is $1500 or 4 payments of $400. Inside the program, you get 4 modules of learning. These lessons include basic anatomy training, biomechanics, somatic exercises and learning the full Pilates repertoire. In our bonus module, we include tips and tools for setting up your business, managing your schedule, clients, and energy. PLUS tools to develop your online teaching. And in case you were afraid of not having any guidance, our master teacher trainer Nicole Watkins is available to answer any questions. You even get two live Q&A sessions with her inside the program.

  4. Extra Costs

There’s the cost of your books or manuals, the cost of any extra props or equipment you may need, plus the cost of your test-out for certification. This can be upwards of $350 depending. In our program, the cost of one test-out session is already included and our books and manuals you can get on amazon for under $100. Since our training is online, you’re at home with your own mat and prop set-up. Inside our Get Started Module, we give you a list of what we like to have at home from super simple to a little extra. Nothing is pricey and we’re also open to you getting inventive with couch cushions and tea towels.

  5. It’s Life Changing

You will upgrade your life while you’re going through a Pilates teacher training. You know what “they” say about all that mind-body connection stuff? Well it’s true. As you move your body in new and different ways, things will be engaged, sometimes it will be hard, and you may cry tears of sadness or joy. What we know to be true is that you if you dedicate yourself to learning your body and the repertoire, you will go through a transformation. Then you get to help others make those connections in their bodies. It’s endless growth as a human when you take on this kind of work. Plus, you get to set you own schedule which is pretty nice too.
