How Much do pilates teachers make?

Something that’s not talked about a lot in teacher training is:

How do I make money at this? Can I make a living at teaching?

Yes and no.

It all depends on...

  1. Your lifestyle/overhead (Where do you live? Kids or no kids? etc)

  2. Your capacity for teaching (endurance and patience)

  3. Your expertise level (Meaning the more experience and multifaceted you are- typically the more you can charge.)

As with any income assessment, you’ll want to start with what’s going out - meaning how much money do you need to pay your bills. It will take time and showing up consistently to build up your teaching practice. So depending on your personal overhead, you may want to keep your day job for a little while longer. This gives you a cushion of time and money to build a burgeoning roster of clients.

Don’t forget to consider to set aside money for taxes, as well as savings. And to start a folder or envelope of things you can write off.

Then consider how much time you have to dedicate to teaching. If you are job-free, fill your dream work hours up with the teaching work you love! If you’ve got other obligations, pick 1-3 days a week and carve out set teaching hours. Regardless of the hours you teach, showing up consistently is crucial to gaining trust with your clients.

We see teachers charge rates of anywhere between $25 to teach a group gym setting to $40+ to teach a group in a boutique Pilates studio to $200 for going to client’s homes and teaching them there. And while you may think “Jackpot! $200/hour. I’m in!” That rate usually comes with experienced teachers who are carving out the time to drive to a client’s home rather than work back to back clients in a studio or their own space.

That being said we want you to create a practice that supports you. That way you can best support your clients. There can be a hierarchy of sorts within our Pilates world. Where you feel you can only charge the higher end point with experience. But if you need to make X-amount, you should feel confident in charging what you need to make that.  We’ve found that it’s nice to start at a modest rate, but not so low that you can’t live your life, and build from there.

In our online Pilates mat training, we’ve got a Bonus Module in our online mat teacher training that gives you lots of tools to set up your teaching practice (both in-person and online) as a business.

Grab your New Teacher Bundle below and you’ll get a formula for how to set your rate!

Set yourself for a thriving business.
